I wonder if J.K. Rowling had any idea of how popular the Harry Potter books and series would become when she was writing snippets on napkins in cafes throughout Edinburgh.

Her story as a struggling single mother to best-selling author is an inspiration in itself which I hope inspires tween readers and writers out there that success can come from any hardship.

The first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, released in 1997 followed by six additional books in the series which have gone on to sell over 500 million copies worldwide.

What are the Harry Potter Books About?

Harry Potter is an orphan who discovers that his parents were a witch and wizard and that he too is a wizard.

He is invited to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where he meets his friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley.

Harry and his friends have many adventures during their years at Hogwarts as the evil wizard Voldemort plans his return to power.

Who Will Enjoy the Harry Potter Books?

The Harry Potter book series will appeal most to tween readers who love fantasy and magic, but also to those who love stories about friendship and perseverance.

by J.K. Rowling

Recommended Age: 7+

Publisher’s Description:

Harry Potter spent ten long years living with Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, an aunt and uncle whose outrageous favoritism of their perfectly awful son Dudley leads to some of the most inspired dark comedy since Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

But fortunately for Harry, he’s about to be granted a scholarship to a unique boarding school called THE HOGWORTS SCHOOL OF WITCHCRAFT AND WIZARDRY, where he will become a school hero at the game of Quidditch (a kind of aerial soccer played high above the ground on broomsticks), he will make some wonderful friends, and, unfortunately, a few terrible enemies.

For although he seems to be getting your run-of-the-mill boarding school experience (well, ok, even that’s pretty darn out of the ordinary), Harry Potter has a destiny that he was born to fulfill. A destiny that others would kill to keep him from.

Of course, Harry has to go back- and he does so in grand style, in a flying-car magicked by his friends Ron and Percy Weasley. But getting back to Hogwarts isn’t the cure Harry expects it to be.

Almost immediately a student is found turned to stone, and then another. And somehow Harry stands accused.

Could Harry Potter be the long-feared heir of Slytherin? Harry and friends Hermione and Fred are stretched to their limits in a desperate fight against Draco Malfoy and his gang, the hideously stuck-up new professor Gilderoy Lockheart, the malevolent owner of the diary of Tom Riddle, giant spiders, and perhaps even…Hagrid!

From its origins on Queerditch Marsh in the eleventh century to the sophisticated sport played today, discover how ‘Quidditch unites witches and wizards from all walks of life, bringing us together to share moments of exhilaration, triumph and (for those who support the Chudley Cannons) despair’, according to Professor Albus Dumbledore’s foreword.

Do you know why refereeing a Quidditch match was once a task for only the bravest witches and wizards, or how to tell a Transylvanian Tackle from a Woollongong Shimmy?

In this enlightening and highly popular Hogwarts library book, Kennilworthy Whisp reveals the daring highs and dangerous lows of the glorious game of Quidditch.

You’re bound to laugh when you read about the havoc wreaked by a father’s impish gift to his son in The Wizard and the Hopping Pot.

The Fountain of Fair Fortune will take you on a quest through an enchanted garden, alongside three witches and a luckless knight.

In The Warlock’s Hairy Heart you’ll be warned about a young warlock who is fearful of love, and turns to dark magic to avoid it at all costs.

The calamitous meeting of a foolish king, a cunning charlatan and a mischievous washerwoman unravels in Babbitty Rabbitty and her Cackling Stump.

And finally, the most iconic of Beedle’s stories. The Tale of the Three Brothers – with its message of humility and wisdom – will introduce you, dear reader, to the Deathly Hallows.

Each of the tales is accompanied by wise and whimsical notes from a certain Albus Dumbledore, surely everyone’s favourite headmaster.

We’re told these five fables have been firm favourites in wizarding households for centuries. Now it’s your turn to experience these tales from the Wizarding World.
